Monthly Highlights Update: April 2024

It is now April and so it comes the time to update our monthly highlights!

Last month we belatedly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Ramones' first live gig and the subsequent arrival of punk rock onto the popular music scene. We focused especially on the Ramones' self titled debut album, along with two British punk albums: "Nevermind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols", by, you guessed it, The Sex Pistols, as well as the iconic "London Calling" by The Clash.

Sticking to our anniversary themed monthly highlights, April sees us staying in the 1970s. On April 6th 1974, a little known band, popular only in their native country, won the Eurovision song contest for Sweden. With the final held in the UK, in Brighton, the band played one of their slightly strange new songs, featuring lyrics inspired by the Napoleonic Wars of 1815. The upbeat "Waterloo" was performed to huge applause and the group went on to achieve victory in the contest. This group, if you hadn't already worked it out, was of course, ABBA.

Following ABBA's 1974 Eurovision victory, "Waterloo" went on to top the charts in a number of countries and ultimately launched the Swedish group to worldwide success and fame. They since have become one of the highest selling popular music artists of all time and have continued to maintain a strong legacy with the "Mamma Mia!" musical and film franchise, several new releases and the hugely popular "ABBA Voyage" virtual concerts.

So this month, we have gone all out ABBA and focused on three of their greatest albums. As a group who seemed to produce a countless stream iconic of hits, we can assure you this was no easy task. Head on over to the home page to see which three of ABBA's albums painstakingly made it into our highlights for this month!
