It's June 1st and officially the start of summer! Time for an update to our monthly highlights!
Last month, we celebrated the 70th anniversary of one of the earliest rock 'n' roll songs and possibly one of the most important tracks in popular music history. 'Rock Around the Clock' was released in May 1954 by Bill Haley and his Comets and we decided to focus on three of the greatest early rock 'n' roll albums with Here's Little Richard (1957) by Little Richard, The "Chirping" Crickets (1957) by Buddy Holly and the Crickets, and After School Session (1957) by Chuck Berry.
This month, for June, we are going with something slightly different. Sticking to the theme of anniversaries, June 2014 saw English pop icon George Ezra drop his debut album Wanted on Voyage. Ezra would later become the sound of the summer in 2018 with his hit song 'Shotgun' acting as the perfect backdrop for the England football team's momentous World Cup campaign.
This got us thinking. The 2024 European Championships, hosted by Germany, kicks off later in June and we thought what better reason to find an excuse to once again combine the beautiful game and popular music. In what is perhaps the most eclectic selection of monthly highlights to date, we have decided to focus on three album releases that would become true sounds of the summer as England prepared to take on Europe, in some of the most memorable tournaments in recent years. Head on over to the homepage to check them out!
